There will be a concert Monday, October 25, but without the piano. On Friday, Steinway Piano Gallery delivered a gorgeous grand piano to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion for the eagerly anticipated concert by Duo MusArt (Raul Prieto Ramirez and Maria Teresa Sierra). But due to the increasing likelihood of rain Monday, we can't take a chance that this beautiful instrument might get wet, so Civic Organist Raul Prieto Ramirez will perform alone on the organ at 7:30 p.m. The Duo MusArt concert will be featured in next summer's San Diego International Organ Festival.

If it rains, we will set up chairs on the stage and other sheltered areas, and will put the organ console under the pavilion overhang to keep it dry.

MONDAY OCTOBER 25th at 7:30pm
By popular demand, piano & organ Duo MusArt is back!

Maria Teresa Sierra, piano

Maria Teresa Sierra is a pianist from Barcelona, Spain. She started playing piano at the age of 3 with her mom, herself a pianist.

With training rooted in the best traditions of Russian Piano School, she holds several graduate degrees with highest honors in the area of education, including honors in the Masters in Music Education from Barcelona University.  At the age of 21 she already hold three Graduate degrees: Piano, Collaborative Piano –Chamber Music- and Music Theory, all three finished with cum laude.  Her Russian piano technique come from the prestigious Russian pianist Leonid Sintsev from Saint Petersburg Conservatory and also from Oxana Yablonskaya from Juilliard School in NY. After winning several International piano competitions she concertized in Europe, Russia and United States. In 2013 she recorded a piano and organ CD with Raul Prieto and with Brilliant Classics label at Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, one of the greatest halls in Europe.

Right now she splits her life between regular concerts and her piano studio. Five years ago she builded her own studio in Carmel, IN and since 2018 Maria Teresa Studio is established in San Diego where she got more than 30 students in her first year. This year Maria Teresa Studio was selected by Expertise as one of the best ten piano Studios in San Diego.

Two young Spanish keyboard artists, described by journal Diari Avui as “two rising stars in Spain”, formed Duo MusArt Barcelona in 2007 to fill a vacant niche on the Iberian musical landscape; the combination of piano and organ in full-scale concert performance. Maria Teresa Sierra, a noted concert pianist who trained at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Raúl Prieto Ramírez, Spain's sensational concert organist who studied in Spain and Germany, are also husband and wife. The high artistic standards and blazing, edge-of-the-seat virtuosity which mark their individual styles permit them as a duo to approach the music with the precision and clarity of a premier chamber ensemble. As Le Monde (Spain) described: “They play as with one mind."

They have performed, always to critical and audience acclaim, at Spain's major concert halls in Madrid (Auditorio Nacional, the Conde Duque Hall, and the Circulo de Bellas Artes) and Barcelona (Palau de la Musica, Auditori Hall, and the Pau Casals hall), Canary Islands (Alfredo Klaus Hall), as well as elsewhere in Europe, including Russia, and throughout the United States.

The duo offers a wide repertoire of original works for piano and organ, as well as their own transcriptions of works by Tchaikovsky, Lutoslawski, Horowitz, Liszt, Gershwin, and famous Spanish masterpieces by de Falla and Granados. In addition, they also commission new works by contemporary composers to add to their concert repertoire. In 2010, they recorded a CD on the Brilliant Classics label at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona.

Among the major festivals at which the duo has been featured are the International Barcelona Piano Festival, the International Festival in Segovia, and the Third International Organ Festival in Russia. In June 2016, the duo was featured at the American Guild of Organists’ national convention in Houston, and in May 2018 at the Virginia Arts Festival in Virginia Beach.
